The Unique Healing Journey for Today's Man
"The images of adult manhood given by the popular culture are worn out." |
While my clients are both women and men, I've noticed over the years a unique dynamic in my male clients that's led to powerful breakthroughs: that of creating a new way of being a man in today’s world.
The past few decades have seen a whirlwind of change in male and female roles in Western culture. Generally, these changes have been in the direction of greater empowerment and awareness for both genders, but especially for women. Quickly receding are the old role models and ways of being for men, particularly those of the ‘machismo’ male who provides for and heads a family. While these rapidly changing roles can have many positive effects (such as the option to be a stay-at-home dad for those who want to), they have often left many men confused about their roles as a man. A new model for being male in our culture has yet to fully emerge. Some men have attempted to meet these new trends of female empowerment by becoming much more feminine (or 'yin'). Others by reverting back to an ‘old-school’, 1950’s style of talking to and acting with women. While these (and other) responses may work for some, I’ve interacted with many for whom neither feel to be a true fit. I've personally been challenged to walk this road, learning to embrace my natural masculinity while honoring my feminine qualities and embodying my highest values. Of course, there's no one solution that fits every man, as we all have differing mixes of energy within. In my work, I've helped many men find a more ideal balance, specifically discovering and nurturing their true self – the deeply authentic parts of us that are feminine/yin, while also ‘reclaiming’ masculine/yang energies in a way that feels healthier than past models. If you are man confronting these kinds of issues, I invite you to reach out to me for assistance with this powerful and transformative work. |
